Purpose:To report on the efficacy and safety of Celexa (citalopram) in a double-blind placebo controlled trial comparing citalopram with placebo.

Results:In the citalopram group, an improvement of at least 1 symptom on the 24-week measurement was achieved in 44 (73.9%) of 180 subjects, compared to 21 (35.3%) of 180 subjects who received placebo (p=0.01). No serious adverse events were reported. The citalopram group experienced a significant improvement in the 24-week measurement of panic-type symptoms with a reduction in at least 2 items in the 24-week measurement, but no improvement was noted in the panic-type symptom subscale of the Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) subscale. The citalopram group showed a significant reduction in panic-type symptoms with a reduction in at least 1 item in the panic-type symptom subscale and no improvement in the panic-type symptom subscale in the Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) subscale.

Conclusions:Although the efficacy and safety of Celexa (citalopram) were not fully assessed, the efficacy and safety of citalopram were assessed in a double-blind, placebo-controlled, placebo-controlled trial.
